1. Shared Branching
Belonging to a credit union means that you can use almost ANY credit union like it were your own. Most credit unions are part of something called the shared branching network, meaning you can walk into that credit union, and perform transactions that you would at your home branch. In Maine, there are 170 branches, and nationally, over 5,400. For college students, I can't think of anything more convenient.
Here's my personal testimony: When I moved to college, I thought I would have to withdraw all of my money from my credit union account, and transfer it to a closer branch. What a headache. That wasn't the case. When my mom told me about shared branching, I learned that I could still deposit, withdraw, and do all of my regular transactions at the credit union on the college campus. Shared branching made my life MUCH easier.
2. Convenient, on-campus locations
When you don't have to leave campus to do your banking, I would call that convenient! Maine's credit unions have several on-campus branches, and also on-campus ATMs that make doing your banking easy. Use the credit union locator to help you find the most convenient branch for you!
3. SURF ATMs
The largest network of surcharge free ATMs in Maine, you can withdraw your money, without paying money! Plus, with convenient on-campus ATMs, you don't have to leave campus to get cash! Find out where the nearest ATMs to you are located!
4. Other convenient services
Credit unions allow you to take advantage of convenient features, like online banking, mobile banking, and mobile check deposit. Most credit unions also offer some really cool accounts with perks, like the Free4ME account, Kasasa Checking, and more!
