Throwback Thursday

It has just come to my attention that I missed an important someone's birthday. And that someone is Stephen King. Just last week, on September 21st he celebrated his 66th birthday!

He is after all a Maine celebrity and public figure, and I thought I would share some belated birthday wishes to Stephen King!

I read his bio online at StephenKing.com and it's actually quite an interesting read. To brief it for you, he was born in Portland, Maine. He graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in 1966 and then went on to the University of Maine where he graduated with a B.A. in English in 1970.

He wrote for the Maine Campus, the student newspaper at UMaine, which I happen to think is pretty cool because I too wrote for the Maine Campus when I was in school.

He met his wife Tabitha in the stacks of the Fogler Library at UMaine, where they both worked as students. They married in January of 1971.

He taught English classes at Hampden Academy in Hampden, Maine and spent his nights writing. He sold short stories to men's magazines until he finally caught a break in 1973. Doubleday & Co. accepted the novel Carrie for publication which gave him the means to stop teaching and write full-time.

As you can imagine, it took a while for his career as a writer to kick off. But he prevailed and continues to publish books to this day. King was recently featured on Good Morning America for his newest release, Doctor Sleep

I'm personally a fan of Stephen King but not because I am a frequent reader of his suspenseful thrillers. He has a house in the town of Lovell, Maine where I grew up and once in a while I would see him driving, out for coffee at the local dinner and whatnot. He gives back so much to that town and throughout the entire state of Maine. I admire his talent and his compassion he has for his communities. Much love to Stephen King!

Happy belated birthday!
