It's Independence Day and you know what that means! It is the true kick off to summer in Maine. Friends and family will gather over food and drink at their usual spots to celebrate our country’s freedom. And nothing says “freedom” more than a fireworks show. And as we all know, fireworks are recently legal in Maine. But hey, that doesn’t mean you have to go and buy them.
The use of fireworks was legalized for the first time in 63 years as of January 1, 2012. I have a sneaking suspicion there was good reason it was outlawed for so many years. Nonetheless, firework stores have popped up all over the state from Presque Isle to Scarborough. Maine has even made an estimated $380,000 in sales tax revenue, which is a lot of fireworks.
Although there are no official statistics on injuries related to fireworks since becoming legal in Maine, fireworks are dangerous when proper care is not used. So be careful today. My suggestion is to find a fireworks show put on by professionals in your local area. Let the professionals do what they do so you and your friends don’t burn your face off. I even found a website with a directory of fireworks shows across the state, so be sure to check your area.
Have a happy and safe Independence Day!
