So, you may or may not have heard that the UN has declared this year as the year of the co-operative! What is a co-operative, and why is it pertinent to you? Well I'm so glad you asked! Here's what you need to know about how this affects you.
What is a Co-operative
A co-operative is essentially a business that is run/owned by its members. They are often times created to uphold certain values that are shared by a group of people. Members of co-operatives have an equal say in what happens within the organization. Pretty cool, right?
Why Should I Care?
Co-operatives are different than normal companies because they are not looking to make tons of money. They are generally more concerned with the socio-economic development. This means they actually care about the well being of their members and making a difference in the lives of others! Co-operatives aren't money thirsty people who are looking to make a quick buck. They care! You know what else is wonderful? Well, if you are a member of a credit union, this year is the awesomest (not really a word) year for you! Credit unions are co-operatives which means that this year could be called the year of the credit union! It makes you feel a little special doesn't it?
Check out the International Year of the Co-operative website to learn more about how these organizations are changing the way people do business, and how they are used in the world today.
What Co-operatives do you use?
