You've decided to save your money and stay at home for spring break this year. Now what?
Just because you're not taking off to a tropical destination doesn't mean you can't have an enjoyable spring break. Here are my top 10 tips for making the most of your spring break at home.
1. Groupon is your friend
I am a big Groupon fan. Through their Getaway deals, you can get affordable weekend trips and activities around Maine and New England. Who says you have to hop on a plane to travel for spring break? Maybe you won’t be able to be lounging on a beach, but some hotels have great heated indoor pools.
2. Tour your own town
Is your hometown known for something unique? Is there a quirky museum down the street? Check ‘em out!
3. Trips on a tankful
Find the MPG for your car with estimates at FuelEconomy.gov, calculate how far you can drive on one tank, and mark destinations on a map within half the distance your tank can get you (you’ll have to drive home, too). You’ll be surprised how far a tank of gas can get you, and what you’ll find at your destination.
4. Jumpstart job search
By the final days of your spring break at home, there’s a chance you’ll be begging for things to do. Use this free time to jumpstart your job search. Whether you’re just looking for a summer job or your first after college gig, get a head start on your resume.
5. Set a fitness goal
It takes two weeks to form a habit. Spring break is the perfect chance to act on that New Years Resolution and get into an exercise routine.
6. Have a bookworm holiday
Read an entire book series from beginning to end. Don’t forget to take breaks for food and water.
7. Start watching The Walking Dead (finally)
Have your friends been bugging you about watching one of the most popular shows on television? See what you’re missing! The first two out of three seasons are on Netflix.
8. Organize your life
Okay, so maybe this isn’t as fun as lounging poolside with your pals, but all this free time is a good opportunity to do all of the cleaning and organizing that you don’t have the chance to do when class is in session.
9. See Maine like a tourist
Hike a mountain, drive the coastline, visit the Maine State Museum. See your state like a tourist and you’ll discover things you never knew about the place you live.
I enjoy being busy but once in a while my full schedule takes a toll on me and I have to remember to take time for relaxation. Spring break was made for catching up on sleep and enjoying extra rest.
Whether you’re at home or in a faraway destination, make the most of your spring break. You’ll miss it when it’s gone!
