New Year, New Voice

Hi, I'm Jake and I'm the new Young & Free Maine Spokester! As the voice of the under-25 crowd, I'm going to give helpful financial tips and share my journey as a recent college graduate. I'll be traveling the state, using social media, writing blogs and making videos in the hope that I can make finances less intimidating, and maybe even fun!

I grew up in the small town of Hiram. As a kid, I spent most of my days playing baseball, fishing or exploring the family farm - I was always outside and I was an active, competitive kid. I took karate lessons and competed across New England, drag raced four-wheelers and dipped my toes into whatever sport I could.

I started taking video production classes as electives when I attended Sacopee Valley High School. Making videos and skateboarding soon became my creative outlets. At the end of my time at Sacopee, I applied to the New England School of Communications at Husson University. I wanted to major in film, and I did just that. After three years at Husson, I started weighing my career options and decided to take a summer internship at one of the local television stations in Bangor. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I started out waking up at 3:30 AM to film the morning newscasts, and eventually transitioned into helping film the station's commercials. I gained tons of experience, connections and friends. Once the internship was over, I was hired on as a production assistant and weekend news photographer. An unpaid internship turned into a job that really inspired me to continue pursuing video. Without that internship, I wouldn't be where I am today.

As the new Spokester, I'm happier than ever. I'm so excited to continue pursuing video, and that I get to share my journey with you all. I look forward to learning all that I can about finances and sharing that information with you! If I'm not on the road in the Green Machine, I'll be out fishing. Does anyone want to toss a line out?

Take care,

Jake
