Happy first day of June to everyone. With all of the rain Maine has been getting lately, I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at some fun things to do when the rain keeps you from being outside. While Maine is a great state, filled with natural beauty and outdoor activities, the reality is not every day will be sunny and in the 80s. So what do you do on a rainy day besides twiddle your thumbs? Here are some fun and cheap things to do while waiting for those dreary clouds to go away.
1. Clean: Okay, I know this may not seem like a fun activity but it is definitely something that needs to be done. Let’s face it, nobody wants to be inside cleaning on a sunny day. Those days are meant for being outside! Why not utilize your inside time by cleaning your apartment or house for a few hours? A little picking up and vacuuming and/or sweeping never hurt anyone. If anything it helps. If you have allergies like I do, maintaining a clean house is healthier for you anyway. It makes it much easier to breathe, and removes the dust and dirt that is everywhere.
2. Did somebody say movies?: Want a cheap and fun activity to do in the rain? Watch a movie! I’m not talking about going to a movie. While it may be fun to get out of the house and see a new flick, movies can be expensive. Nowadays, movies can cost up to 10 bucks in some areas, just for admissions. That’s not including popcorn, candy or soda. In this day in age, nearly everyone has a subscription to cable TV, a satellite dish or Netflix. Utilize those for rainy days. There’s almost always a movie playing on some station, and Netflix can be watched online, or through many gaming consoles. Pop your own popcorn, buy a bag of candy and drink your own beverages. Better yet, invite people over and have them bring the goods. If you all chip in, it can be a nice cheap way to beat the rain. If you’re like me and you don’t have cable, satellite or Netflix, that’s okay. Watch a movie you haven’t watched in a while on DVD (or VHS). You can even go to a Red Box and get a 99 cent movie. A movie for a dollar? Now that’s my kind of movie. If you want a real laugh from a movie, watch an old family video, and make fun of how cute, quirky, dorky etc, you once were. There’s nothing quite like taking a trip down memory lane.
3. “I love me some butter”: If you have ever watched the Food Network, you should know exactly who I am talking about. If you don’t watch, go look up Paula Dean, or any other cook for that matter, and find some great new recipes to try out. Generally speaking, rainy days make it cooler inside, and much more pleasant to bake or cook. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy cooking a nice dinner when the sun is shining, but the oven also has a tendency to boost the temperature in your apartment or house. Cooking on a rainy day is nice because not only does it fill the room with tasty aromas (provided you don’t burn it) but chances are, your cooking area isn’t already blistering with heat. Who doesn’t like a nice warm meal on a not so nice day?
4. Mbaqanga is a word?: Yes, it is a word, and if you play your tiles right (like on a triple word score) you’ll be one happy scrabble player. Play a board game! Grab a friend, or group of friends and play a board game somewhere. It doesn’t necessarily have to be where you or your friends live. Go to a local coffee shop or bookstore or anywhere else with a table that is available. There are tons of board games available at cheap prices, and chances are you or your friends have a few lying around. Don’t have any board games or can‘t afford to buy one? Grab a deck of cards and play with those. Cards are much cheaper, and you can play countless games with them. Plus, if you get tired of playing card games, you can always go online and learn new tricks to show your friends. Everyone loves a good card trick. Why not learn one when you’re stuck inside!
If all else fails and you really want to go outside…well, DO IT! Grab a raincoat and an umbrella and go outside. A little puddle jumping never hurt anyone. What are your favorite activities?
