I talked a little bit about student loans last week, because let's face it. Most of us who are college graduates have them, and some of you just graduated last week! Not only that, but I am going to be discussing more about loans very soon, and hopefully be able to take you through a wonderful adventure where I get a car loan. Let's face it. I'll need one soon! I might as well take you along for the ride (no pun intended).
My college loans are typically due on the 18th of each month. It's not always a pleasant experience...let me rephrase that. It's never a pleasant experience paying off my monthly debts, but the reality is that pretty much everyone has some amount of debt. It can cause serious stress in your life if you don't deal with it correctly. Now, I'm not implying that reading this will make you happy about paying your college loans each week, but there are definitely some ways to ensure that paying off your loans will not be as unpleasant as it could be. Here's some tips to minimize stress the next time all those college loans are due.
Watch your caffeine intake
I'm a repeat offender of drinking mass amounts of caffeine on busy days. If you are looking for a way to relieve stress on loan payment day, don't drink excess caffeine. Yes, it gives you a nice pick me up, but it also raises your adrenaline levels. More adrenaline pumping through the body means more potential for stress. Drink decaf instead!
I've written about this before, but it is worth repeating. If you feel yourself beginning to get anxious about things, take a few deep breaths. The deeper you breath, the more oxygen your brain will get. It also lowers your pulse and heart rate, which will allow you to calm down. I suggest doing this each time you open a new bill payment. BREATHE!
Realize you can't control that you have debt
Newsflash. Most everyone has debt. While you can control some aspects of it we'll all be paying bills until we die. It probably doesn't sound overly pleasant, but take the good with the bad. Yes, you have a fair chunk of change you need to pay back, but you also have the skills to get a decent job now because you have a college degree. Realizing that you cannot control the fact that you have student debt will help relieve the stress. Also realizing that someday it will be paid off can help. Take it one day at a time!
I had no idea! Smelling peppermint is apparently a great way to relieve stress. Treat yourself to a peppermint mocha hot chocolate the next time you are a little stressed. It will help relieve your stress by giving you something comforting to drink (chocolate) and enjoying a tasty peppermint beverage. On an unrelated note...I now know why candy canes are mostly peppermint flavored. You've just spent tons of money on gifts, but you're sucking on a candy cane. You don't have a care in the world!
