What is Free4ME Checking?

So today marks one month of me working for Young and Free Maine! It's been a great experience so far, and it's only going to get better. My Calendar is filling up (well it will once I put in all my events. Trust me, it's busy) and pretty soon I'll be all over the place promoting Young and Free Maine and the joys of joining a credit union. That's what the byline of Young and Free should be. The Joy of Joining a Credit Union. It's kind of like Bob Ross and the Joy of Painting. Who didn't like those happy little trees when they were growing up? I know I did! Maybe a little squirrel named Clyde lives in there...okay I'm getting way off topic. Let's get back to what I was talking about!

If you didn't know, Young and Free Maine is designated towards the 18-25 year olds of Maine promoting financial freedom. What you may not know is that Young and Free Maine is also looking to bring 18-25 year olds to credit unions to open accounts. There are a lot of misconceptions out there about credit unions, and it's probably why there aren't as many "Gen Y"ers involved in credit unions as there could/should be. After researching a bit, I came across a staggering figure. The average age of credit union members nationwide is 47 years old. Great grandmother's spatula! That does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. We need younger members to join to help ensure that credit unions are around for a very long time. I could go on and on about how I think credit unions are better alternatives to big banks (they're local, better loan rates, not for profits...etc) but I'm not going to talk about that today. If you are a member of the Gen Y generation and are 18-25, there is no better reason to join a credit union like Free4ME checking. You haven't heard about Free4ME* checking? Well, let me tell you about the awesomeness (yup, it's a word...I think) and why you should join.

Musical Bliss

You listen to music...you know you do. Open a Free4ME checking account and you'll get a $10 iTunes gift card after 90 days of it being open. Just think, you won't have to pirate that song you want to hear and risk being arrested. Win win!

I Could Have Sworn I had More Money Then That in my Account

With Free4ME checking, there are no minimum balances required in the account, there are no monthly fees to have it open and you're allowed two overdrafts a year with no consequences (They call it an Oops! refund). Big banks charge somewhere around $25 to $30 bucks per overdraft. In the words of my friend Scott, "I accidentally overdrafted while buying coffee one time...that was the most expensive cup of coffee I have ever purchased."

I do my Banking Online

Just because we live in Maine doesn't mean that we are behind the times...well in banking that is. Maybe in some areas, but online banking is not one of them. Open up a Free4ME checking account and enjoy the pleasures of doing your banking in your PJs! I do mine from the comfort of my own bed and I don't even have to look presentable. Your computer doesn't care if you have bad breath or are half asleep.

Save Some Trees

Are you a hippie? Do you love Maine's wilderness? Well, if you join a credit union, you can do your part to save our lovely Maine forests and have your statements and account transactions all paperless and available at the click of a button. Way to go! Bob Marley would be proud of you.

There are essentially no reasons to not join a credit union. Don't be afraid of what your bank will say when you leave them. It's your money, and you can do what you want with it. Why not put it in a place that will ensure it stays in Maine, and allows you to have all these awesome perks? Nearly every credit union in Maine is offering Free4ME checking right now so stop into one soon and open up a new account! I can assure you, you'll be happy you did.
