I have no idea why, but I have been thinking a lot about my childhood (like it was that long ago) and what happened to some of my favorite toys, sites and other random things. I decided to go do some research and find out what happened to some of my favorite things from the 90s/early 2000s. Warning...this blog may cause you to reminisce of what used to be!
I got myspace my junior year of high school. I think that my page is still up actually...although I have no idea what my password is anymore so I don't know if I could even get in. I haven't been on in quite some time, which is a shame because Myspace used to be the ste to visit in high school. If you look at today's web designers, they probably got their start on Myspae. What other sites do you know of that allowed you to write your own HTML code to make crazy backgrounds? It definitely was something special. Nowadays, Myspace has essentially died off and is not nearly as popular as it used to be (thanks a lot Facebook). It is mainly a music site now which bands can upload their music and use it as a way to interact with their fans. You can even log into Myspace with Facebook...which five years ago would have just been awful!
I don't even remember where I found these things, but they were essentially the easiest pets ever. You watch them hatch before your very own eyes, and within a few days, you have tons of shrimp like creatures swimming around your mini aquarium. Having some issues with your sea monkeys dying? Add some love potion and BOOM! You'll have more sea monkeys in a few days. So what happened to these? I have a feeling you can probably find them at the most random department stores (like Mardens maybe?) but if you are really itching to kick back to your childhood, you can order the kit online. It apparently takes about a month for you to get your sea monkeys, but if you are patient enough, it will be totally worth it!
Home Star Runner
I can't be the only person who used to go to Home Star Runner when I was in high school. I remember watching random tunes from Home Star, Strong Bad, Strong Sad, Coach Z and all the other awesome characters. I'd sit and write emails to Strong Bad in hopes that I would get my Email answered...It never happened, but my friend actually had his email answered! Unfortunately, the site hasn't been updated for over a year now, so I imagine that the folks behind the site decided to bail. I will say that any time I want a flash back to my freshmen year, I am sure to check out the site and relive the glory days.
I was so jealous of my friends who got a virtual pet on their key chain! Who wouldn't want an 8-bit pet that would annoy you all the time it was hungry or when it pooped Hershey kisses? Looking back, I think it was probably one of the weirdest and most innovative fake pets of all time. It sold for about fifteen bucks. If you want to go back and buy another one, apparently they are available at some target locations, and also online! I believe there may even be an App for the virtual guys on iPhone. SCORE!
I'm pretty sure I only grazed the surface of things I remember from my childhood. I would love to hear your input and what you remember from the good old days (the 90s and early 2000s). Also! I know I announced it yesterday, but we officially launched the Sound Off contest for aspiring musicians who are 18-25 years old. Check it out and tell your friends!
What do you miss from your childhood?
