Weekend Adventures in Maine

What's up in Maine

With summer in full swing, I hope that everyone had an awesome weekend, whether out at the beach, camping, hiking, or enjoying one of Maine's awesome festivals!  Here is a recap of the Moxie Festival in Lisbon in case you missed it!

The celebration of Moxie, Maine’s official soft drink, is not a celebration to be taken lightly.  From Moxie chugging contests to running marathons, Moxie is highly prized in the state of Maine.  In 2005, the beverage was declared Maine’s official soft drink.

Lisbon’s Moxie Festival - a festival celebrating the famous Maine beverage - happens every July.  It brings in people from all over to celebrate its, well, unique taste!  When you have a Moxie drinking goat, and a Moxie man, the soft drink-celebrating festival must be official!  This Saturday, I met up with Lisbon Community Federal Credit Union, and some of their awesome staff, to celebrate Moxie’s taste and history in the Moxie Festival Parade!

Demystifying Moxie

Before going to the festival, I had never sampled Maine’s official soft drink.  The staff of Lisbon Community FCU wouldn’t let this slide, so I broke the 24-year streak I had without having Moxie in my life.  For those of you who have never had the pleasure of experiencing the beverage, here is my best attempt to describe the taste:

Think Coke, but sweeter, with a hint of root beer.  Then toss in a splash of cherry, and you have MOXIE!  Feel free to leave your comments and share your thoughts on Moxie's unique flavor (it definitely is not easy to pinpoint)!

So, if are feeling brave enough to try Moxie, here is some advice from the Lisbon FCU’s staff:

You must not take just one sip.  The first sip may be gross, but you have to keep going, and take a second.  If you still don’t love the taste after the second, you need to take a third.  Then, if you have not completely fallen in love with the beverage, pass on the can to someone who does.  It is a love-hate relationship with Moxie.

Well, that was the Moxie Festival in a nutshell!  Thank you to Lisbon Community FCU for being so graciously inviting!  This weekend, they exemplified what credit unions are all about - getting out and being a part of the community!  They passed out bucketfuls of delicious candy and had one of their brave staff members (who I will not reveal) walk through the parade as Monty the Moose!  They even won an award for their awesome float!

Hope you come back to read about more weekend adventures in Maine, share your thoughts and your adventures with me, and continue living young and free!
