The Maine Credit Union League’s Young Professionals Network (YPN) is a great resource for staff and volunteers, ages 21-to-40, that focuses on providing career development opportunities, networking and education. While growing together as future leaders, members of the YPN are working hard, fulfilling our industry’s collective mission of “people helping people.”
The YPN recently volunteered at both of Good Shepherd Food Bank’s locations in Auburn and Hampden. Volunteering was a great opportunity for the Young Professionals (YPs) to work together on the Ending Hunger Campaign, which Maine’s Credit Unions have raised $6.5 million on behalf of since 1990.
The Good Shepherd Food Bank helps those in need in each of Maine’s 16 counties. They are Maine’s largest food bank, partnering with more than 90% of the state’s food pantries. Last year alone, Good Shepherd Food Bank distributed more than 19 million meals to Mainers in need!
After a networking coffee hour and a discussion on industry topics, the YPs jumped right into helping inspect and sort food, wash dishes, arrange tables and iron tablecloths. The regular Good Shepherd Food Bank volunteers were extremely welcoming and helpful, and the YPN was able to both prepare for a banquet to honor partner farmers and process 4,752 pounds of food, which translates into 3,960 meals!
How have you participated in the Ending Hunger Campaign? I’d love to know!
